People are now living in a “throwaway society” where things are used for a short period of time and then thrown away. What are the causes of this and what problems does it cause?

    • Write at least 250 words.

    7+ Band Answer

In recent years, many societies have developed a “throwaway culture,” in which products are used for a short time and then discarded. This trend is mainly driven by consumerism, cheap production, and social influences, and it causes serious environmental and social problems. This essay will discuss the main causes of this phenomenon and the problems it creates.

One of the main causes of the throwaway society is mass production combined with low manufacturing costs. Due to globalisation and technological advancements, goods such as clothing, household items, and electronic devices are produced quickly and sold at affordable prices. As a result, people often find it easier to replace broken or outdated items rather than repair them. Another important factor is advertising and social media. Companies constantly promote new products and trends, encouraging consumers to buy the latest items to appear fashionable or successful. This pressure leads people to throw away products that are still in good condition.

The throwaway culture creates several serious problems. The most significant issue is environmental damage. Large amounts of waste, including plastic and electronic products, end up in landfills and oceans, causing pollution and harming wildlife. Fast fashion, in particular, produces excessive waste and releases microplastics into water sources. In addition, the constant demand for new products leads to the overuse of natural resources and higher carbon emissions. Beyond environmental concerns, this behaviour can also negatively affect social values by encouraging wastefulness and reducing people’s sense of responsibility towards sustainability.

In conclusion, the throwaway society is mainly caused by cheap production and strong consumer influence, but it leads to serious environmental and social consequences. Addressing this issue requires greater awareness, responsible consumption, and effective policies to promote recycling and sustainable living.
