Describe your favorite place in your house where you can relax | May to August 2025 Cue Card | IELTS Speaking | 8 Band Sample

    Where it is

    What it is like

    What you enjoy doing there

And explain why you feel relaxed at this place

    VOCAB / IDIOMS

    1. Kick things off – Begin something
    2. Unwind – Relax mentally
    3. Hectic day – Busy day
    4. Cozy – Comfortably warm
    5. Food for soul – Emotional comfort
    6. Sense of belonging – feeling of being accepted and valued as part of a group, place, or community
    7. Hustle and bustle – Busy activity
    8. Constant stress – Ongoing pressure

Well, to kick things off, there’s no denying that a house is more than just four walls and a roof—it’s a place where we unwind and recharge after a hectic day. In my opinion, nothing beats the comfort and peace that comes from spending time in our own space. Here, I’d love to shed light on my favourite relaxing spot at home: our dining area.

To be specific, our dining area is next to the kitchen. It has wooden furniture, soft lights, and a big window with lots of natural light. The walls are painted in a calm pastel color, and there is a small flower vase on the table that makes it feel cozy. It is simple but nice—nothing fancy, but very comfortable.

What I truly enjoy doing here is sitting with my cup of tea, especially during the early morning or late evening hours. Sometimes, I listen to soft instrumental music, and other times I read the newspaper or just chat with my family. On weekends, I often sit there for hours, simply thinking about my day or looking out the window. It’s like food for the soul.

The main reason I find this place so relaxing is because it’s where the entire family gathers and shares not just meals, but also stories and laughter. It brings a strong sense of belonging. Also, since it’s away from the hustle and bustle of other rooms, I can sit there in peace and collect my thoughts.

All in all, this cozy corner of my house is not just a place to eat—it’s a spot where I can truly unwind and let go of my worries. It’s the main part of the house, and whenever I’m there, I feel comfortable and happy.

    Follow-ups

    1. Why is it difficult for some people to relax?
To begin with, many people find it hard to relax because of constant stress from work or personal life. Moreover, the fast pace of modern life often leaves little time for rest. For example, some individuals struggle to switch off their minds even after long work hours.
    2. What are benefits of doing exercise?
First and foremost, exercise improves physical health by strengthening muscles and boosting immunity. In addition, it helps reduce stress and anxiety, leading to better mental wellbeing. For instance, regular jogging or yoga can increase energy levels and promote a positive mood.
    3. Do people in your country exercise after work?
Generally speaking, many people try to fit in exercise after work despite busy schedules. However, the amount of physical activity varies depending on lifestyle and awareness. For example, some join gyms or go for evening walks, while others might prefer indoor workouts.
    4. What is the place where people spend most of their time at home?
Typically, the living room is where most family members spend their time together. This area is used for watching TV, chatting, or relaxing after a busy day. For instance, families often gather there during meals or leisure time.
    5. Do you think there should be classes for training young people and children how to relax?
Certainly, teaching relaxation techniques to young people can be very beneficial. Not only does it help manage stress early, but it also promotes healthier habits for life. For example, mindfulness or breathing exercises in schools can improve focus and emotional control.
    6. Which is more important, mental relaxation or physical relaxation?
Both mental and physical relaxation are important, but mental relaxation is a bit more important. This is because a calm mind helps the whole body feel better. For example, even if the body is resting, a worried mind can still make a person feel tired and stressed.
