Music at any event has the power to set the tone and shape the overall mood, which makes the occasion both enjoyable and memorable. However, at the same time, poor song selection can do the exact opposite and ruin the atmosphere entirely. One such incident happened to me when I attended a college farewell party.
The college organised the event in our college hall, which was decorated with lights and banners to mark the farewell of our seniors. Students from different departments were gathered there. The purpose of the gathering was to honour our seniors, celebrate their achievements, and give them beautiful memories.
Unfortunately, the music played during the event was highly disappointing. The DJ mostly played loud Western rap and electronic dance music with fast rhythms and an intense sound. In fact, the same type of songs were repeated, which made the music feel monotonous and boring.
I didn’t like the music as it was completely unsuitable and poorly matched with the nature of the event. Rather than creating a warm and nostalgic atmosphere, it completely killed the mood. The volume was excessively high, which made normal conversation difficult. Moreover, the music appealed only to a small group of students and ignored the presence of teachers and older guests. The inappropriate song selection spoiled the real purpose of the farewell.
Overall, this incident taught me that music can either make or break an event. Despite good arrangements, the wrong choice of songs took away much of the enjoyment. With better music, the farewell could have turned into a truly memorable experience.
Follow-ups
1. Why do so many young people spend a lot of money on concerts?
To begin with, young people are passionate about live music and enjoy the excitement of seeing their favourite singers in person. Moreover, a concert is a social event where they can enjoy with friends and create memories. For example, many youngsters save money to attend famous singers’ shows and post the experience on social media.
2. Do you think older people like the same music as young people?
Generally speaking, and to a great extent, their tastes are quite different. While young people prefer pop, rap, or modern songs, older people usually enjoy classical or old film music. However, some evergreen songs are loved by both generations, which creates a common ground.
3. Do you think music concerts are suitable for old people to attend?
To some extent, yes, but it depends on the type of concert. Loud and crowded shows may be uncomfortable, whereas soft classical or devotional concerts can be relaxing for them. Therefore, the suitability varies according to the environment and music style.
4. Why do shopping malls often have background music?
First of all, background music creates a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. As a result, shoppers feel comfortable and tend to stay longer. Moreover, calm music can encourage people to shop more, making it a useful marketing strategy.
