IELTS General Writing Task 1: Letter to the Editor About Shopping Facilities

You normally go shopping in the area where you live. However, you think some of the facilities for shoppers could be improved.

Write a letter to your local newspaper. In your letter:

    • say in general what you like about shopping in your area
    • say what is wrong with the facilities
    • suggest how they can be improved

    Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my views regarding the shopping facilities in our local area. Overall, shopping here is quite pleasant, as there is a wide range of stores, including supermarkets, clothing outlets, and small local shops. In addition, the area is well connected by public transport, which makes it convenient for residents to visit regularly.

However, there are several issues that need attention. Firstly, parking facilities are insufficient, especially during weekends, causing inconvenience to shoppers. Secondly, there are very few public restrooms, and the existing ones are often poorly maintained. Moreover, seating areas for elderly people are extremely limited.

I believe these problems can be resolved with some practical measures. The local authorities could build a multi-level parking facility to reduce congestion. Regular maintenance of public restrooms should also be ensured. Finally, installing more benches and shaded resting areas would greatly benefit senior citizens and families.

I hope these suggestions will be considered for the betterment of our shopping area.

    Yours faithfully,
    Name
