IELTS General Training Letter: Objection to Building a Shopping Mall | Sample Answer & Solutions

You have heard that the local authority is planning to build a shopping mall in the centre of your town. You do not agree with this decision because there are already a lot of shops. Write a letter to the planning department. In your letter -say why you are writing -give reasons for your objections -explain what you think would be a better alternative

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the proposed plan to construct a shopping mall in the centre of our town.

I strongly object to this decision for several reasons. First, there are already numerous shops in the area that cater to residents’ daily needs. Building another mall would not only create unnecessary competition but also increase traffic congestion. Despite the claim that it will boost the local economy, the negative impact on small businesses cannot be ignored.

If this plan goes ahead, it could lead to overcrowding and environmental degradation, especially in an already busy part of town. Not only will it disturb the town’s character, but it will also put pressure on existing infrastructure.

A better alternative would be to develop green spaces or community centres. These would provide recreational areas for families and help promote well-being, which the town currently lacks.

Thank you for considering my opinion.

Yours faithfully,
[Your Name]
