Describe an item on which you spent more than expected

    • What it is
    • How much did you spend on it
    • Why you bought it
    • And explain why you think you spent more than expected.

    Idioms/vocab

    1. Live within my means – spend only what you can afford
    2. Once in a blue moon – something that happens very rarely
    3. Spoiled for choice – having too many good options to choose from
    4. Add fuel to the fire – make a situation more intense or expensive
    5. Keep my purse strings tight – control spending, not waste money
    6. Splurge – spend a lot of money at once
    7. Elegant – stylish and attractive
    8. Unavoidable – something that cannot be avoided

To begin with, I am not a person who usually splurges on expensive things, especially clothes, because I believe in saving money and living within my means. However, one item on which I ended up spending more than I had planned was a traditional wedding outfit.

If I remember correctly, a few months ago I had to attend a close relative’s wedding. Since it was a special occasion, buying something suitable was unavoidable. At first, I made up my mind to purchase a simple dress within a reasonable budget. But once I started window-shopping and came across many attractive designs, I was spoiled for choice. I wanted something that looked classy, fitted me well, and stood out a little, as such events come once in a blue moon.

In the end, I spent around twenty to thirty thousand rupees, which was way beyond my initial plan. The main reason was that I chose good-quality fabric and went for custom stitching. On top of that, matching jewellery and small finishing touches added fuel to the fire. Moreover, my family encouraged me to buy something special, which made it hard to keep my purse strings tight.

Although the outfit looked elegant and I received plenty of compliments, later I felt it was an emotional purchase. I wore it only once, so the cost did not really seem worth it.

All in all, this experience taught me that emotions and family influence can sometimes make us go over budget without even realising it.

    Follow-ups

    1. Do you often buy more than you expected?
To be honest, not very often. But sometimes I get attracted to beautiful things like jewellery or nice dresses, and at that time I spend more than I had planned. Apart from this, I usually try to be careful with my money and spend only on things that I really need.

    2. What do you think young people spend most of their money on?
I think young people mostly spend their money on clothes, music, and electronic items such as mobile phones and earphones. Many girls also spend a good amount on makeup and beauty products. Besides this, young people like to spend money on hanging out with friends, going out, and enjoying hobbies like sports, gym, or gaming.

    3. Do you think it is important to save money? Why?
Yes, I strongly believe that saving money is important and necessary. It helps us stay safe in difficult times, such as medical problems or when someone loses a job. Moreover, having savings gives us peace of mind and helps us live a comfortable life without stress.

    4. Do people buy things that they don’t need?
Yes, many people buy things they do not really need. They are often influenced by advertisements, sales, or attractive discounts. Sometimes, people also shop just for fun or to feel happy, which results in unnecessary spending.Bottom of Form
