Describe a time when you are waiting for something special that would happen

    You should say:

    • What you waited for
    • Where you waited
    • Why it was special
    • And explain how you felt when you were waiting

    Vocab/ Idioms

    1. eagerly → very excited
    2. plenty of → a lot
    3. snail’s pace → very slow
    4. on pins and needles → very nervous
    5. roller-coaster → ups and downs
    6. over the moon → very happy
    7. red letter day → special day

Well, everyone goes through moments in life when they wait eagerly for something important, and here I’d like to talk about a time when I was waiting for my final exam results.

I was waiting at my home during the summer holidays. Since there were no classes, I had plenty of free time, but instead of relaxing, I kept checking my mobile phone again and again and refreshing the university website. It felt as if time was moving at a snail’s pace, and each day seemed longer than usual.

This moment was special because those results were a turning point in my life. My admission to the next course depended on them, and I had invested a lot of time and effort throughout the year. Moreover, my parents also had high hopes, so I was under a bit of pressure to perform well. In a way, my future depended on those results.

While waiting, I was on pins and needles. On one hand, I felt excited and hopeful, imagining the best possible outcome. On the other hand, I was anxious and kept thinking about the worst-case scenario. Every notification sound made my heart beat faster. It was truly an emotional roller-coaster.

However, when the results were finally declared and I saw that I had done well, I was over the moon. All the tension disappeared in a moment, and I felt extremely proud and relieved.

To sum up, that waiting period was stressful, but it taught me patience and trust in my hard work. It was truly a red-letter day that I will always remember.

    Follow-ups

    1. On what occasions do people usually need to wait?
To begin with, people often have to wait for exam results, job interviews, buses, trains, or doctor’s appointments. For example, students wait  for their board results, and commuters stand at bus stops during rush hours. So, waiting has become a routine part of everyday life.

    2. Who behaves better when waiting, children or adults?
Generally speaking, adults behave better because they have more patience and self-control. For instance, in a hospital waiting room, adults usually sit quietly, while children start moving around and asking questions. However, even some adults lose their temper when the wait is too long.

    3. Compared to the past, are people less patient now? Why?
In my opinion, people are less patient nowadays because of technology. For example, we get food delivered in minutes and information in seconds, so we expect everything to be quick. As a result, when a train is late or the internet is slow, people easily get irritated.

    4. What are the positive and negative effects of waiting on society?
On the positive side, waiting helps people learn patience and self-discipline, such as students who wait for their results and learn to trust their hard work. On the negative side, long waiting in government offices or traffic jams can cause stress and frustration. So, while waiting builds tolerance, it can also test people’s patience.
